Hints of Flexibility

NEW YORK () -- On the eve of contract negotiations aimed at ending Major League Baseball's strike, owners' representative Richard Ravitch hinted at greater flexibility over their key demand for a salary cap.

Asked if owners were open to other ideas, Ravitch said Tuesday: "Of course we are. We have a lot of flexibility."

But the owners' chief negotiator added: "We're locked only to the fundamental concept that there has to be a relationship between cost and revenue."

Players' union head Donald Fehr said the linkage of costs and revenues meant owners were not really moving away from insistence on a salary cap. Negotiations were to resume Wednesday.
