Helicopters Attack Chechen Capital

Two military helicopters with Russian markings launched a rocket attack on a civilian area on the outskirts of Chechnya's capital Grozny on Friday, Interfax reported.


A senior member of the Chechen armed forces told Interfax four rockets were fired at civilian buildings, causing casualties. How many was not yet clear.


Earlier the Chechen Provisional Council, which is fighting to oust President Dzhokhar Dudayev's regime, said helicopters belonging to the council attacked government positions.


Opposition forces also said they blew up the Abkhaz barracks and a government ammunition depot in Grozny's Oktyabrsky district early Friday.
