Hardliners Accuse U.S.

MOSCOW () -- A small hardline group accused the United States on Monday of plotting to use next week's joint U.S.-Russian peacekeeping exercises as a first step toward the eventual occupation of Russia.

The Sept. 2-10 exercises call for 250 U.S. Army troops to join an equal number of Russian soldiers in Totsk, in Russia's Orenburg region about 1,100 kilometers southeast of Moscow.

The "so-called peacekeepers" plan to reconnoiter the Russian Army's capacity, local air fields and defenses, said General Yury Yefremov, a leader of the Liberal Patriotic Revival Party.
