Gooch, Atherton Ignite

NOTTINGHAM, England ? England captain Mike Atherton and his predecessor Graham Gooch shared an unbroken century stand to press home the advantage against New Zealand in the First Test on Friday. Atherton hit an unbeaten 60 and Gooch thumped 69 not out as they put on 135 for the second wicket and carried England to 151 for one when rain forced tea to be taken early on the second day at Trent Bridge. New Zealand's last two wickets had added only a further 15 in the morning before they were all out in their first innings for a modest 251.
