Futuristic Train Plan

Chancellor Helmut Kohl's cabinet decided Wednesday to build a futuristic magnetic train system that will carry passengers at speeds of up to 400 kilometers an hour.

The train, called the Transrapid, is to ferry passengers between Hamburg and Berlin, 300 kilometers away, in about 53 minutes by the year 2005.

Riding on a cushion of air, the Transrapid will ride on a magnetic rail raised to tree level by pylons. The government says the system will cost about 8.9 billion marks ($ 5.2 billion). The German government says the train's technology is the most advanced of its kind.
