Fondriest Needs a Rest

Italian cyclist Maurizio Fondriest, winner of the World Cup for the second time last season, requires surgery on a herniated disc in his back and will be out of the sport for at least two months.

Fondriest has resigned himself to missing the Giro d'Italia from May 22-June 12. "I've been told that I will be out of the sport for at least two months. I will have to miss the Giro," he said.

Fondriest, captain of the Lampre-Panaria team, is expected to go under the surgeon's knife on Wednesday. He aggravated the injury when he fell on the penultimate stage of the Tirreno-Adriatico tour earlier this month.
