MOSCOW () -- Russia put new boundaries with Estonia into effect Friday despite the Baltic nation's refusal to recognize them.
Estonia has demanded that Russia return an area of 2,300 square kilometers which it surrendered in 1920 but took back 20 years later when the Soviet Union annexed Estonia. Russia has denounced the claims as unfounded.
Russian President Boris Yeltsin ordered in June that the 90-kilometer long border be marked off unilaterally, following the failure of Russian and Estonian diplomats to reach an agreement.
"Marking off the border will help fight the smuggling of Russian raw materials, drug trafficking and illegal migration," said Major Anatoly Prokopyev, of the Russian Border Guards.
