Energy Crisis Eases

ALMATY, Kazakhstan () -- An energy crisis in the former Soviet republic of Kazakhstan caused by a two-week coal miners' strike eased Monday as supplies resumed to a vast steelworks that had been facing a potentially devastating shutdown.

Strike leader Vyacheslav Sidorov said the Karmet steelworks started receiving coking coal supplies after paying off 350 million tenge ($6 million) of the 500 million tenge it owed for past deliveries.

Karmet, one of the largest steel plants in the former Soviet Union, was on the brink of a shutdown last week that would have forced its blast furnaces to be rebuilt at ruinous expense.
