Eagles on the Rise

WASHINGTON -- America's bald eagle, nearly wiped out by pollution and loss of habitat, has recovered enough to lose its government classification as an endangered species, conservationists said.

The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service is set to propose that the national symbol no longer be classified as "endangered," but as "threatened."

Protected by the Endangered Species Act and by stronger environmental laws, nesting pairs of eagles have rebounded from 791 in 1978 to about 7,500.
