Dissident Gets 3 Years

SHANGHAI () -- Shanghai dissident Li Guotao has been sentenced to three years of "re-education through labor," dissident sources said Tuesday.

Li is a member of the Shanghai-based Association for Human Rights, which has been battling city authorities to register as a legal entity.

Virtually all known political activists in Shanghai are now either in jail or under some form of administrative detention.

The move comes in the middle of a visit by U.S. Defense Secretary William Perry during which Washington has pledged to push for improved human rights in China, but spent much time talking of military cooperation.
