Diptheria Kills 43

VLADIVOSTOK, Far East () -- Authorities have declared a state of emergency in Russia's far east after a diphtheria outbreak killed 43 people, a health official said Tuesday.

The official said the state of emergency had been introduced in the Primorsky region, whose capital is Vladivostok, to try to stem the spread of the disease.

Doctors were carrying out on-the-spot vaccinations at road and city checkpoints across the vast region, he said.

Itar-Tass said over 1,700 people had contracted the disease and its incidence had reached a "critical level."
