Defense Workers Strike

YEKATERINBURG () -- More than 2,000 angry workers from a major defense plant blocked a main street in the Urals city of Yekaterinburg to demand wages they said had not been paid since February, Interfax said.

Tuesday's demonstrators were from among 6,000 workers employed by Vektor, one of Russia's biggest makers of electronic air-defense equipment.

Like many other enterprises in Russia's post-Soviet economy, Vektor says it cannot meet its payrolls because the government and contractors have not paid it.
