The next summit of the Commonwealth of Independent States will be held in Moscow on March 31, Uzbek President Islam Karimov said Wednesday.
The CIS held its last summit in Turkmenistan in December.
Karimov was speaking after a meeting with President Boris Yeltsin during which he pledged that his country would cooperate with Russia on economic and military issues. He also stressed that the two former Soviet republics would remain closely linked.
"Uzbekistan does not see its future without Russia," he said.
Karimov signed three treaties and discussed a series of other issues, including minority rights for Kazakhstan's Russian-speaking citizens.
"This is the first time that the delegation of a former Soviet republic has been accepted on such a high level, as the head of an independent state," Itar-Tass quoted the Uzbek leader as saying.
The news agency said Yeltsin and Karimov agreed to coordinate price, taxation, customs and currency policies to speed the transition to a common market for goods, services, capital and labor.
The Russian and Uzbek armies would also step up cooperation.
