MOSCOW () -- Police in Moscow arrested a gang of ethnic Chechen bandits who extorted money from fellow Chechen businessmen in the Russian capital, officials said Thursday.
The gang was apprehended after its members broke into an apartment of a businessman and seized $2,000 and a licensed gas pistol from him, police said in a statement carried by Itar-Tass.
Members of the gang then took the businessmen to the woods on the outskirts of Moscow and tortured him, demanding $10,000. Freed to get the money, the victim contacted police.
