Caspian Sea Warning

MOSCOW () -- Rising water levels in the Caspian Sea are threatening to flood vast areas of farmland in southern Russia and failure to take action could result in a natural catastrophe, Izvestia said Tuesday.

But the newspaper said the rising sea could be good news for one of Russia's most important products: caviar.

About 70 percent of the Caspian's sturgeon population, which produces sevruga and beluga caviar, lives in the Astrakhan region, said Anatoly Vlasenko, deputy director of the Caspian Fish Research and Science Institute.

"Rising levels of water will make better conditions for living and for the process of regeneration of sturgeon," he said.
