Bruton Meets Adams

DUBLIN () -- Newly-elected Irish Prime Minister John Bruton, honoring a pledge to make Northern Ireland his top priority, met Sinn Fein president Gerry Adams briefly Friday and said he hoped to have fuller talks before Christmas.

Bruton, head of a right-left "rainbow coalition" government which came into office Thursday, shook Adams's hand at a forum set up to cash in on the dividend brought about by almost four months of unprecedented peace in Northern Ireland.

Bruton's gesture was seen as being aimed at dispelling doubts that he would take a tougher line on Sinn Fein, the Irish Republican Army's political wing, than his predecessor, Albert Reynolds.
