British-Irish Talks

DUBLIN () -- British and Irish ministers held talks Wednesday to bolster a year-old Northern Ireland peace process marred by killings in Belfast blamed by police on Irish nationalist guerrillas.

The meeting took place amid doubts about a summit scheduled for Thursday between British Prime Minister John Major and Ireland's John Bruton because of a row between them over state aid for Ireland's steel industry.

Initial high hopes have been dented by the Irish Republican Army's refusal to hand over weapons, along with a rash of "non-political" killings, including a Roman Catholic man who was killed Tuesday. Britain says the incidents undermine a truce called by the guerrillas last year.
