Blizzards Hit Shetlands

LONDON () -- A state of emergency has been declared in Shetland, Britain northernmost outpost, after the worst blizzards in memory closed every road on the islands and cut power supplies to thousands of homes.

Shetland Islands Council announced the measure Tuesday after snow ploughs failed to clear the islands' roads.

It set up a telephone help line for residents, some of whom had been without electricity for three days, and a helicopter stood by to drop food and fuel to the worst affected areas.
