Blast Blamed on Tamils

COLOMBO, Sri Lanka -- A string of explosions blamed on Tamil rebels ripped through Sri Lanka's two main oil depots Friday, sparking battles between the attackers and government forces that left at least 26 people dead.

The pre-dawn blasts set oil storage tanks ablaze, shrouding the city in black smoke and prompting thousands of panicked residents to flee the Colombo suburbs, fearing more explosions.

The government said a seven-man guerrilla squad blew up the tanks.
