Beijing Rejects Appeals

BEIJING () -- The Beijing Higher People's Court on Wednesday rejected the appeals of 15 Chinese dissidents sentenced to prison terms ranging up to 20 years, court officials and activists' relatives said.

The dissidents responded to the appellate court's decision by calling out slogans demanding democracy and proclaiming their innocence, relatives quoted courtroom witnesses as saying.

The sentences, imposed by the Beijing Intermediate People's Court, the capital's main trial court, were among the heaviest meted out to political dissidents since a nationwide purge that followed the army's bloody suppression on June 4, 1989.
