Becker Wins Sabre Title

ATHENS -- Germany's Felix Becker won his first world sabre title in a dramatic fashion after defending world champion Grigory Kiryenko of Russia and Hungary's Olympic gold medalist Bence Szabo both lost in the semifinals. Becker, whose previous best individual performance was seventh in the 1988 Seoul Olympics, beat Russia's Stanislav Pozdnyakov 15-14 in the final with a superb comeback after trailing 12-3 with one minute to go.
