Baseball at Impasse

NEW YORK Baseball's players and owners have flatly rejected one another's proposals as the sport continued along a familiar path that seems all but certain to produce a late-season player strike.

In a four-hour session Monday, union chief Donald Fehr argued that the owners' salary cap proposal would hurt free agency and reduce salaries. The union suggested a continuation of the current system that has produced an explosive growth in revenues and salaries.

The only question seems to be when the strike will begin and how long it will last. Fehr said a strike date will be set in the next two weeks, and the union is reportedly considering everything from Aug. 16 to Sept. 30
