Base Dismantling Stalls

MOSCOW -- Russia has suspended indefinitely dismantling nuclear reactors at the former Soviet naval training base in Paldiski, Estonia, Interfax said Thursday.

Part of the decommissioning work had already been carried out by Russian navy and industry specialists, Interfax quoted authoritative sources as saying, but without security guarantees from the Estonian side and conclusion of an agreement it would be impossible to continue the work.

A Russian navy spokesman in Moscow could neither confirm nor deny the report.

Estonian officials have said two reactors are disintegrating from neglect and must be removed.
