Balkan Leader 'Stable'

SKOPJE, Macedonia ) -- Doctors expressed guarded optimism Wed-nesday about President Kiro Gligorov after he underwent surgery for head injuries suffered in a car-bomb attack.

The tiny Balkan republic was trying to forge ahead without the man who led it to independence four years ago in the breakup of former Yugoslavia.

There was no further information on who may have planted the remote-controlled bomb that exploded as Gligorov's armored Mercedes passed through central Skopje on Tuesday. His driver was killed, a guard and five pedestrians were wounded.
