MOSCOW ) -- Prosecutors have filed official charges against a suspect in the 1990 ax murder of a prominent Russian Orthodox priest, officials said Friday.

Father Alexander Men, a priest well-known for his evangelical activities and writings, was hacked to death while walking to a country church.

Eduard Denisov, a deputy prosecutor for the Moscow region, told Interfax that the suspect, detained Nov. 17, was a local resident, but would not give his name.

Interfax also quoted Oleg Gaidanov, Russia's deputy chief prosecutor, as saying the suspect had confessed.

The suspect had been questioned shortly after the killing, but investigators satisfied with his alibi released him, the influential daily Izvestia said.
