Axe for Spartans Coach

EAST LANSING, Michigan () -- George Perles, wiping away tears, was fired as Michigan State's football coach Tuesday by a university president tired of losing.

Peter McPherson, Michigan State's president, said Perles, 59, would coach the team's last two games of the season against Purdue and Penn State.

Georgia Tech football coach Bill Lewis stepped down Monday and the school named defensive coordinator George O'Leary to finish out the season. Lewis had an 11-19 record in three seasons, including 1-7 this year.
