Argentina Buries Boxer

BUENOS AIRES, Argentina () -- Argentines buried their greatest boxing hero, former world middleweight champion Carlos Monzon, on Monday in his hometown of Santa Fe.

Monzon, 52, was killed Sunday when the car he was driving ran off a country road and overturned several times, throwing him and two passengers out of the vehicle. One passenger also was killed and the other injured.

The death stunned Argentines who followed Monzon's career, as well as his violent streak that put him in prison for the murder of his estranged companion, Alicia Muniz, in 1988.

President Carlos Menem praised Monzon "as a great champion who always tried to serve Argentina's interests."
