Allies Back Gonzalez

MADRID () -- Political allies of Spain's Socialist government have rallied to the support of Prime Minister Felipe Gonzalez, facing a new wave of corruption allegations.

Catalan and Basque nationalist leaders, on whose votes the minority Socialists depend in the Madrid parliament, reaffirmed their backing for the government.

The expression of support came as, for the third straight day, the government issued a detailed, formal denial of fresh allegations of favoritism in awarding public contracts to a company owned by Gonzalez's brother-in-law, published in the daily El Mundo.

The charges are the first to implicate Gonzalez himself.
