Algerians' Peace Plan

ROME () -- Senior members of Algerian opposition groups said Tuesday they had agreed on a draft peace proposal that they intended to present to the army-backed government.

Representatives of the groups, including the outlawed Islamic Salvation Front, said after talks in Rome that the joint proposal included a call for a cessation of hostilities and negotiations with the government on a return to democracy.

The opposition groups have been meeting since Sunday in Rome at the Sant' Egidio Community, a Roman Catholic peace group. The Algerian government, which boycotted similar talks last November, has branded the latest initiative an interference in its affairs.
