Africans Discuss Angola

PRETORIA -- Four African presidents held Angolan peace talks Thursday and South African President Nelson Mandela said he was no longer pessimistic about ending one of the continent's bloodiest conflicts. Asked after the summit whether peace was possible in Angola, Mandela said: "After today's talks, there is no reason for pessimism." Mandela, involved at the request of the UN, hosted the meeting attended by Presidents Jose Eduardo dos Santos of Angola, Mobutu Sese Seko of Zaire and Joaquim Chissano of Mozambique. UNITA rebel leader Jonas Savimbi was conspicuous by his absence, but South African officials said UNITA representatives would next week arrange a meeting between Mandela and Savimbi.
