African Crash Kills 60

DOUALA, Cameroon () -- About 60 of 77 passengers and crew were killed when a Cameroon airliner crashed into a mangrove swamp as it attempted to land in Cameroon's commercial capital Douala, airline officials said Monday.

Fishermen in dugout canoes were the first to reach the wreckage of the Boeing 737, which came down Sunday in the swamp in pitch darkness, complicating rescue efforts.

The cause of the crash was not immediately known but airport officials said the pilot first tried to land then aborted the attempt, apparently due to problems with the undercarriage.
