7 Killed in Sweden

STOCKHOLM -- An army officer has shot seven people to death with an assault rifle and wounded an eighth in a central Swedish town, police said. They called it the worst violent crime in modern Swedish history. The 24-year-old gunman was arrested and confessed to the crime, police said, adding that the gunman apparently was drunk at the time of the killings in a park in Falun, 230 kilometers northwest of Stockholm. Five of those killed early Saturday were young women who were serving in the voluntary women's army auxiliary corps, police said. Two men who were passing by were also killed.
