4 Die in Train Smash

KALUGA, Southern Russia () -- A passenger train speeding backward downhill after its brakes failed smashed into a second train early Thursday, killing four people and injuring 20, officials said.

The accident happened near the city of Kaluga, 200 kilometers southwest of Moscow. The train was en route from Moscow to the Ukrainian capital, Kiev.

The train's electric locomotive had stopped but then suddenly began moving backward when the brakes failed, said Marina Ryklina, a spokeswoman for the Emergency Situations Ministry.

It slammed into the second passenger train, whose crew managed to stop their locomotive and leap off before the collision.
