4 Bombs Hit Heathrow

Four mortar bombs believed to have been fired by the IRA have landed on a runway at Heathrow airport, disturbing attempts to settle the British-Irish conflict.

The mortars landed on a runway at London's main airport Wednesday evening just 17 minutes after a Concorde landed. More planes landed in the next 40 minutes before the runway was closed. The mortars did not explode.

The Irish Republican Army has not claimed responsibility, but the timing coincided with a meeting Thursday of Irish and British ministers to review a faltering peace initiative.

Officials at Heathrow, the world's busiest airport, were discussing with police how to improve security.
