2 Radicals Condemned

HAEKSTEP, Egypt () -- A military court sentenced two Moslem radicals to death Tuesday after finding them guilty of taking part in the stabbing of Nobel Prize-winning novelist Naguib Mahfouz.

The 83-year-old writer was accused by the radicals of being an apostate because of a 1959 allegorical novel that made references to religious figures such as Jesus and Mohammed. Mahfouz survived the attack but suffered damage to nerves which have hampered his ability to write.

The court found 11 other defendants guilty of helping to plan the Oct. 14 stabbing and sentenced them to jail terms.
