Eighty percent of cars on Moscow roads at any time contain only one person, a city official said Wednesday.

That figure came from data from special detectors recently installed on Moscow streets that identify how many cars are on the roads and other traffic patterns, deputy mayor for transit issues Nikolai Lyamov announced Wednesday, RIA-Novosti reported. The city has installed 1,500 of the detectors, Lyamov said.

Moscow is creating an intelligent transportation system in an attempt to improve the situation with traffic jams, which paralyze parts of the city daily. As of October, more than 4 million cars and trucks had been registered in the city by the Moscow traffic police.
