Bertie Ahern replaces Albert Reynolds, who resigned Thursday. Ahern now faces the task of winning back Fianna Fail's former Labour coalition partners, who left the government in protest over a senior judicial appointment, sparking Reynolds' resignation.
Parliament is due to vote Tuesday on the formation of a new government.
Ahern, who has had little involvement in the Northern Ireland peace process so far, said the issue would now be at the top of his agenda.
