Blackburn, United Stay At the Top

LONDON -- Early goals by Alan Shearer and Mark Atkins and a sweetly struck free kick by Graeme Le Saux powered Blackburn to a 3-1 victory at Manchester City on Monday and made sure Rovers stayed atop the English Premier League standings.

Hours earlier Manchester United had temporarily replaced Rovers as league leader by winning 3-2 at Chelsea.

At Maine Road, however, Shearer struck his 20th goal of the season and Atkins made it 2-0 after 16 minutes to give Rovers an early advantage before Niall Quinn replied for City in the 22nd minute. England left back Le Saux made sure of the points for Rovers by curling in a left-footed free kick in the second half.

Brian McClair killed off a strong Chelsea fightback by scoring the clincher as defending titlist Manchester United gained a 3-2 victory at Stamford Bridge.

Chelsea, which beat United twice in the league last term, hit back from 2-0 down to tie the game with 13 minutes remaining. But McClair silenced the Chelsea cheers a minute later by scoring United's third.

A John Spencer penalty and a header from substitute Eddie Newton tied the game up for Chelsea before McClair's winner.

A Message from The Moscow Times:

Dear readers,

We are facing unprecedented challenges. Russia's Prosecutor General's Office has designated The Moscow Times as an "undesirable" organization, criminalizing our work and putting our staff at risk of prosecution. This follows our earlier unjust labeling as a "foreign agent."

These actions are direct attempts to silence independent journalism in Russia. The authorities claim our work "discredits the decisions of the Russian leadership." We see things differently: we strive to provide accurate, unbiased reporting on Russia.

We, the journalists of The Moscow Times, refuse to be silenced. But to continue our work, we need your help.

Your support, no matter how small, makes a world of difference. If you can, please support us monthly starting from just $2. It's quick to set up, and every contribution makes a significant impact.
