The first child to be named in honor of Crimea, the Black Sea peninsula that Russia annexed from Ukraine last year, has been born in the Urals city of Yekaterinburg, Izvestia newspaper reported Tuesday.
Krym Alexandrovich was registered in one of the city's districts last week, a local registry office told the newspaper.
In the last three years, several girls were named after the 2014 Sochi Winter Olympics. Five girls were named Olimpiada in St. Petersburg, two in the Krasnodar region and one more in Nizhny Novgorod, the report said.
In Soviet times, the tradition of naming children after important Soviet symbols and events was widespread. Numerous girls were named Oktyabrina in honor of the October Revolution, while boys were called Vladlen after Vladimir Lenin, among others.
