311 years ago, on Jan. 2, 1703, the first Russian newspaper was printed under the name Vedomosti. The publication was an initiative of Tsar Peter the Great, who saw the paper as a tool to reinforce his authority over the country and educate his people. Peter himself actively contributed to Vedomosti by selecting content and making corrections.
