533 years ago today, on November 11, 1480, Muscovy gained independence from the Tatar-Mongol Yoke a month after a battle on the Ugra River known as the Great Stand. One of catalysts to Muscovy earning its freedom was Ivan III's refusal to pay the annual tribute to the Great Horde four years earlier.
