ACCRA, Ghana — Supreme Court head Vyacheslav Lebedev was injured in a car crash while on a visit to Ghana, authorities said, prompting the Emergency Situations Ministry to send a plane with a medical team to evacuate him.
Court spokesman Pavel Odintsov said he spoke with Lebedev by telephone Tuesday and said "he feels OK," Interfax reported. Lebedev was placed in intensive care at a military hospital.
An unidentified source told Interfax that Lebedev was expected to be flown out of Ghana on Wednesday. A team of doctors is traveling on board the plane sent by the emergencies ministry, the source said.
Lebedev, 70, was traveling outside Ghana's capital Monday when a truck veered into his lane and struck his vehicle, authorities said.
Lebedev had gone to Ho, about 160 kilometers east of Accra, to open a meeting of the Ghana Bar Association and was returning to the capital at the time of the crash.
A Message from The Moscow Times:
Dear readers,
We are facing unprecedented challenges. Russia's Prosecutor General's Office has designated The Moscow Times as an "undesirable" organization, criminalizing our work and putting our staff at risk of prosecution. This follows our earlier unjust labeling as a "foreign agent."
These actions are direct attempts to silence independent journalism in Russia. The authorities claim our work "discredits the decisions of the Russian leadership." We see things differently: we strive to provide accurate, unbiased reporting on Russia.
We, the journalists of The Moscow Times, refuse to be silenced. But to continue our work, we need your help.
Your support, no matter how small, makes a world of difference. If you can, please support us monthly starting from just $2. It's quick to set up, and every contribution makes a significant impact.
