The Federal Veterinary and Phytosanitary Inspection Service, or Rosselkhoznadzor, is withdrawing a batch of U.S. boneless beef after laboratory tests showed that it was infected three strains of E. Coli.
An infection with Shiga toxin-producing strains of E. coli can lead to the development of life-threatening hemolytic uremic syndrome, a on the watchdog's website said.
United Processing LLC, the source of the potentially dangerous beef, is not registered as a supplier for the Russian market, the agency said.
U.S. imports came into question earlier this year, when meat containing the growth hormone ractopamine was banned from the Russian market in February.
