771 years ago today, on April 5, 1242, Roman Catholic crusaders were soundly defeated in the Battle of the Ice, stopping their attempts to invade Russian territories for the next century. The battle, which pitted mostly Estonian Teutonic Knights against soldiers of the Novgorod Republic, was fought largely on the frozen Lake Peipus.
