MTS Faces License Problems

Uzbekistan's prosecutor general has accused Uzdunrobita, the local subsidiary of Mobile TeleSystems, of illegally operating its branches without licenses, Interfax reported Thursday.

The prosecutor's office estimates the government suffered about $220 million in damages due to nonpayment of license fees from 2008 to 2012. Information about the criminal investigation against Uzdunrobita employees has been posted on the prosecutor general's website.

The prosecutors said Uzdunrobita subsidiaries operated under their parent company's license but had to get licenses of their own to comply with Uzbek law.
