PHNOM PENH, Cambodia — Cambodia plans to deport a Russian pedophile who served a prison term in Cambodia and is wanted in his home country.
The director of Cambodia's Interpol Bureau said Tuesday that Alexander Trofimov was being sought by Interpol on Russian child sex abuse charges.
Lieutenant General Keo Vanthan said the 45-year-old Trofimov would be deported rather than go through the complicated legal process of extradition. He said Trofimov was detained Monday and would be expelled soon, but did not specify where he'd be sent.
Trofimov was sentenced in 2008 to 17 years in prison for sexual offenses with almost 20 girls. The sentence was reduced on appeal to eight years, and he was freed under a royal amnesty last December.
Before his October 2007 arrest, he headed a Russian investment project to develop a $300 million island resort.
