Tajiks Send $3Bln Home

DUSHANBE, Tajikistan — Tajik labor migrants in Russia transferred $2.96 billion to their home country in 2011, 33.6 percent more than in 2010, Tajik National Bank deputy chairwoman Malokhat Kholikzoda told a news conference Thursday, Interfax reported. 


"Money transfers from Russia to Tajikistan grew 33.6 percent to $2.96 billion last year, which amounted to 45.4 percent of gross domestic product," she said.

The previous record in money transfers to Tajikistan was set in 2008 with $2.52 billion, or 49 percent of GDP, she said. According to the Tajik Migration Service, about 1.03 million Tajik labor migrants are permanently employed in Russia.
