Polyus Gold said Newmont Mining and AngloGold Ashanti aren't among the "large players" it's talking with about a possible merger, denying an RBC Daily report Tuesday.
"We have consultations with some large players in the industry about the possibility of a merger, but Newmont and AngloGold are not among those companies," Polyus board member Yevgeny Ivanov said Tuesday, declining to name the parties involved.
Polyus chief executive Mikhail Prokhorov said in December that he planned to combine the company with a global competitor as early as 2011 to become one of the world's three biggest gold miners.
