The Sverdlovsk region court on Friday sentenced 45 participants of a 2007 riot at a local prison for minors to prison terms of two to 12 years, the court said in a statement.
The court also ordered the convicts to pay fines of 2.8 million rubles ($92,000) to the Kirov city prison; 26,000 rubles ($845) to the regional police; and 1 million rubles ($32,000) to the wife of a prison worker killed in the riot.
About 200 minors staged a riot in an attempt to escape from the Kirov prison in October 2007, the court said. The riot left two prisoners and a prison worker dead, while 73 riot police officers and a dozen other prison workers were injured.
Justice Minister Alexander Konovalov on Thursday condemned "inappropriate" conditions in prisons that force prisoners to "fight for survival," RIA-Novosti reported.
The convicts are aged 19 to 23 now, and at least one of them was 18 at the time of the riot, a regional news web site, E2-e4.ru, reported.
