Russian Side Warming Up For Davis Cup

Russia's top tennis players will tune up for next week's Davis Cup final against Sweden with their own round-robin tournament Saturday at the Olympic Sports Center.

The $100,000 Russia Cup will feature Yevgeny Kafelnikov, Alexander Volkov, Andrei Chesnokov and Andrei Cherkasov in one-set singles matches, with the top two players advancing to a final.

Kafelnikov, the world's No. 11 player, heads the Russian team that takes on Sweden Dec. 2-4. Volkov and Cherkasov are also on the team, along with Andrei Olkovsky, who is now playing in the doubles world championships in Indonesia. Chesnokov is the team's reserve.

The Russia Cup starts at 2 P.M. Saturday, with a masters' doubles tournament beginning at 12 P.M. Tickets are available at the Olympic Sports Center box office (metro: Prospekt Mira).

The tournament is sponsored by MeshkomBank and Rosvoorozhenia, a state-run weapons company.

A Message from The Moscow Times:

Dear readers,

We are facing unprecedented challenges. Russia's Prosecutor General's Office has designated The Moscow Times as an "undesirable" organization, criminalizing our work and putting our staff at risk of prosecution. This follows our earlier unjust labeling as a "foreign agent."

These actions are direct attempts to silence independent journalism in Russia. The authorities claim our work "discredits the decisions of the Russian leadership." We see things differently: we strive to provide accurate, unbiased reporting on Russia.

We, the journalists of The Moscow Times, refuse to be silenced. But to continue our work, we need your help.

Your support, no matter how small, makes a world of difference. If you can, please support us monthly starting from just $2. It's quick to set up, and every contribution makes a significant impact.

By supporting The Moscow Times, you're defending open, independent journalism in the face of repression. Thank you for standing with us.
